Travel and Expat Insurance for Thailand (2026): 3 Plans Compared

Provider pages checkedLast verified: Oct 15, 20263 options

These three plans are built for stays of a month or longer. We read each provider's own pages for the facts below. SafetyWing is listed first because it is our affiliate partner, and it is labeled Partner. The other plans follow in alphabetical order.

Visa insurance rules: none of these providers says its plan meets a Thai visa insurance requirement. Genki says in its terms that it cannot guarantee it. If your visa asks for insurance, check the exact wording with your Thai embassy first.

SafetyWing Nomad Insurance Partner

Pay-by-the-month cover for people living abroad

What we confirmed

  • The base plan costs $62.72 per 4 weeks for ages 18 to 39.
  • Overall limit of $250,000, with $100,000 for medical evacuation over a lifetime.
  • You can buy it before or during travel.
  • Home-country medical cover is limited to 30 days.

Check before you buy

  • Pre-existing conditions, maternity and cancer treatment are excluded.
  • The only full policy document we could read is undated, so deductibles and age limits may differ today. Read the current policy first.
  • We could not read the FAQ answers on scooters, visa rules or US buyers.
  • Prices for ages 40 and older need the live calculator.

Check before you buy

  • Pre-existing conditions are excluded if you had symptoms, a diagnosis or treatment in the year before the start date.

Heymondo (Long Stay plan)

For trips of 90 days or more, with an age cap

What we confirmed

  • Age limit is 49. That rules out most retirees and some remote workers.
  • 90 days costs $162 outside the USA, or $296 including the USA. Renewal prices are listed up to 275 days.
  • Medical limit of $2,500,000 and repatriation of $500,000. Deductible of $250 on medical costs.
  • A 14-day withdrawal right applies if no claim has been made.

Check before you buy

  • Pre-existing conditions and armed-conflict zones are excluded.

  • The page doesn't date its prices.

How to choose

  • Check the age limit first. It decides the list for you.
  • Compare the medical limit and the deductible. The monthly price alone doesn't tell you enough.
  • Read the pre-existing condition rule for your own situation.
  • If you plan to ride a scooter, find the rule in writing. Genki states it covers normal driving with a helmet. We could not confirm it for the other two.
  • Ask how long you can be covered and whether you can renew from abroad.

Questions people ask

Does travel insurance meet Thailand's visa insurance rule?

None of the three providers we checked states that it meets a Thai visa insurance requirement. Genki says it cannot guarantee that. The O-A and O-X retirement visas ask for insurance, so confirm the exact wording with your Thai embassy before you buy a plan.

Does insurance cover scooter accidents in Thailand?

Genki states that scooter and motorcycle riding counts as normal driving, with a helmet. We could not find scooter rules for Heymondo or SafetyWing. SafetyWing's older policy document excludes some motorized dirt bikes and quad biking. Read each policy's driving rules before you ride.

Can I buy travel insurance after I arrive in Thailand?

Genki says you can start a policy while already traveling. SafetyWing's product page says you can buy before or during travel. We could not confirm this for Heymondo. Some plans add a waiting period for non-emergency care, so read the start rules first.

Are pre-existing conditions covered?

All three exclude pre-existing conditions. Genki excludes them if you had symptoms, a diagnosis or treatment in the year before the start date. SafetyWing also excludes maternity and cancer treatment. Read each policy's wording for your own medical history, and ask the provider if anything is unclear.
